Coconut Oil Hair Mask Instructions

A coconut oil hair mask is a highly effective and inexpensive way to way to treat dry, brittle hair that has been damaged by over-coloring, over-treating or overexposure to harsh environments. Normal wear and tear on your hair can usually be treated with routine shampoo and conditioning occasionally supplemented with a pre-wash coconut oil treatment for extra moisturization. But there are extreme cases where it is worth the extra time to do an intensive coconut oil hair mask that penetrates deep into the cortex of your hair strands. A coconut oil hair mask can revitalize overworked hair and provide lasting nourishment that will keep it healthy for days and weeks to come. Carefully follow the steps below and you can expect your overworked hair to begin the recovery from the dry, fizzy mess it has become. After using coconut oil for hair, you’ll be showing off your full, shiny locks in no time.

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 tablespoons of coconut oil for hair
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon of an essential oil such as jojoba oil
Preparation:
  • Organic virgin coconut oil is thick, white and semi-solid at room temperature but it will quickly melt to a more pliable state if you work it with your fingers
  • Once warm enough to mix, combine the coconut oil in a small bowl with olive oil and a dash of your favorite essential oil. We recommend jojoba oil.
Application:
  • Apply the mixture evenly to the hair with a thorough massage that starts at the roots and works out to the ends
  • Wrap the hair in a bun on top of the head and wrap the bun in a warm towel (one right out of the dryer works best)
  • Leave the mask in and your hair wrapped for at least 30 minutes. Depending upon just how intensive a moisturizing treatment you may need, you can leave the mask on for two hours or even overnight. There is no danger in leaving it in too long (unless you don't like your hair smelling like a delicious piña colada)
  • Alternatively, if you are in a rush, you can apply heat to the hair using a hair dryer for 10-15 minutes after application. This will help to absorb the coconut oil faster.
  • Rinse out the coconut oil mask in the shower. Shampoo and condition as usual.
Frequency:
  • Coconut oil hair masks should be done on an "as needed" basis but there is no danger of harming your hair with too much coconut oil. Generally speaking you can get the maximum benefit of coconut oil masks by applying them about once a week.
